Telling Your Story
Springhouse residents are involved in a weekly writing group at the Brookline Council on Aging called “Telling Your Story.” One of our residents has been involved in this group for over 15 years. The attendees are all seniors from the local community who enjoy “telling their stories.” The group meets weekly and various members will share their writing materials, they could be short stories, a reflection or memory or poetry. The sharing of stories helps members to create new subject matters to write about. A longtime member of the writing group and Springhouse resident, Dr. Fuzzy Downs, has three volumes of bound stories she has accumulated over the years. What a terrific keepsake for her to share with family members.
The writing group is quite diverse, participants come from various backgrounds, religions and cultures. This translates into very interesting reading material. This was apparent at the end of the writing session program presented to family and friends.
Four Springhouse residents participated in the program. Those lucky enough to attend heard stories about a newly married couple and their trials and tribulations of their wedding; a funny reflection of a young groom losing his newly purchased wedding shoes.
Another story was about an Austrian family moving to the United States and their unrealistic expectations of what the USA was like in the 1939.
Another resident shared a humorous memory of being involved in a high school production of “The Passion Play.”
This writing group is a perfect example of staying active, engaged and keeping your mind busy no matter what your age. Springhouse is thrilled to have these residents share their stories with us year after year.
